Turner Designs has recently donated a handheld fluorometer that will be a welcome addition to the work done on the primary production studies in St Lucia Estuary. Phytoplankton and phytobenthos productivity in estuaries plays an essential role in element cycling, water quality, and food supply to heterotrophs. The aim of this study is to provide quantitative data of biomass and productivity for phytoplankton and microphytobenthos and to analyse the correlation with biotic and abiotic parameters.
The fluorometer will supply essential data on the concentration of primary producers in situ and will help us to clarify spatial and temporal difference in production that we find.
